In the north-western town of Yauri, Nigeria, locals celebrated after successfully hunting down a dangerous hippo that had terrorized their community. The animal, responsible for killing a fisherman and damaging farmlands, was hunted by local farmers and fishermen who used traditional spears. The Kebbi state government had authorized the hunt for the safety of people living near the River Niger, where the hippo had been spotted multiple times.

After the animal was killed, its body was brought to a local leader’s palace, where it was butchered, and its meat distributed to the community. While the town rejoiced, the incident drew mixed reactions online, with some expressing concern over the conservation status of hippos, which are endangered. Conservationists argued that instead of killing the animal, authorities could have relocated it to a safer area, given its declining population across the region.
